Radio amateurs are always ready

Austria's Meinbezirk reports no matter what crisis situation, in the event
of a failure of electricity and telecommunications networks, radio amateurs
are the first to re-establish contact with the outside world

A Google translation reads:

There are 6,000 of them throughout Austria. The district Gmünd is well
equipped with groups in Schrems and Heidenreichstein. "Even the blue light
radio is only for a limited time, it is powered by batteries and when there
is no more power, the batteries are empty. Mobile radio, fiber, everything
is then ratzfatz away," knows *Rainer Gangl OE3RGB*, Chair of the amateur
radio club Heidenreichstein, founded in 2006.

Although the radio amateurs of the Burgstadt still belong to the national
association with a group, they are basically a separate club. They are
among the few in Lower Austria who have broken away from the association in
their quest for greater autonomy. Currently, the club has 39 members, aged
27 to 80 years. These are mostly, but not only, from the upper Waldviertel.
And they are all obliged to help in an emergency: "In the event of a
disaster, we have to provide our equipment and our knowledge and are
obliged to forward emergency calls." What's in there does not interest us,
we're just the transmitters, "explains Gangl.

The prerequisite for being able to spark is the amateur radio license. The
Heidenreichstein radio amateurs have already trained 20 members. Gangl, who
got his license in 1970, is sure: "Everyone can do it." Interest assumed.
Because the amateur radio is not only intended for emergencies - above all,
it is a hobby. When Gangl sends a radio message to the world in the
presence of the district papers, Maurizio announces himself at the other
end. The two talk about the weather and chat in a comradely way.

The future of the radio amateur club Heidenreichstein is secured thanks to
intensive junior work. According to the chairman, there are already
potential successors to his role. Additional members are always welcome.
