Shutdown of analogue radio

The UK House of Lords Select Committee on Communications 2nd Report of Session 2009-10 which deals with the changeover to DAB in 2015 is now available.

Current plans are to shutdown AM and FM broadcasters in 2015, with those stations only being available on DAB.

The UK uses an early version of DAB which is incompatible with the DAB Plus system being adopted by other countries. DAB Plus is more efficient giving a far greater choice of stations and the failure of the UK to adopt DAB Plus means that multi-standard chips will be needed.

With regard to this the report says:

"We recommend that the Government should work with manufacturers to ensure that digital car radios are fitted with multi-standard chips as soon as possible and inform consumers of availability and benefits of digital radios containing the multi-standard chip."
