 Bouvet guys Cape Town bound

The position given in the recent 'Bouvet DXpedition news' was confusing,
especially the 0.41 degrees West. It is further compounded because the last
AIS position for the Betanzos was from January!
The Automatic Identification System is carried by all vessels to give
position, speed and distance. Possibly, because the vessel was outside the
normal shipping lanes the AIS was turned off, or it is not functioning!

The writer has been in touch with maritime authorities in South Africa.
The guestimate ETA for Cape Town is 15 February @ 1500 local (1300 GMT) The
other anonomoly is the varying speed of the vessel quoted by someone
monitoring the GARMIN beacon. This may indicate that the second engine is
operational some of the time. But the authorities would not be drawn on
this line of questioning.

The authorities have agreed to be contacted for updates and to see if the
AIS is operational. It is unknown if the vessel is included in the IMO
automatic weather reporting system. As a ship that plies the Southern
Oceans, it would be expected.

An update will be issued when new information is received
