Four ways Ham Radio connects and inspires the world

NASA have published an article by *Erik López KG5TMU* of the International
Space Station Program Science Office, Johnson Space Center, which explains
the role of Amateur Radio on the ISS

Crew members aboard the International Space Station are able to communicate
with students all over the world using the station’s ham radio, a radio
that uses amateur radio technology to operate. Since its inaugural contact
in 2000, the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
project has been used to connect more than a quarter of a million students
with the astronauts living and working aboard the space station, exposing
the students to science, radio technology, and space.

Although many different pieces of technology are required for a ham radio
contact to be successful, one of the most important is the collaboration
between the many groups of people involved. Just like the space station is
a multi-national effort, each ham radio contact requires groups from
various cultures, careers, and countries to work together to achieve a
common goal: inspiring future generations.

Each ARISS contact raises awareness about the space station and the
scientific research the crew members conduct each day.
