Counting down to participating in the 60th Jamboree-On-The-Air

With only a few days left, the excitement is building in the 3rd *Limerick
Scout Group* which will participate in the largest Scouting event in the
world which sees over 1 million Scouts in over 150 countries coming
together on the airwaves in the 60th *Jamboree On The Air*.

Preparations for operation from IO52NO in which the Curraghchase Scout
Centre in County Limerick, Ireland is located are at an advanced stage for
the group who will be camping there. The Expeditionary Radio Team from
the *Kerry
Amateur Radio Group* will be assisting the Scout Group. For some of the
Scouting members it will be their first practical introduction to the world
of radio communications while others will have had some exposure from
various badge work that they have undertaken.

A hands on approach is being taken with the Scouts who will be involved in
all aspects of the event from logistics through to execution. Training in
the radio communication aspect of the weekend is ongoing for all members
with much interest and enthusiasm being shown by the 70 strong group of
youth members and leaders alike.

The Scout group will be very busy setting up and operating the main radio
communications station for Jamboree-On-The-Air, building and erecting a
mast of their own design capable of raising a HF dipole on Saturday as well
as setting up a 2 metre station at an outdoor location given by a grid
reference somewhere on the 200 acre site. From this station they will be
required to establish radio contact with the base station via a 2 metre
repeater to receive instructions for the location and retrieval of a hidden
item that will be needed for a very special purpose later on the Saturday
evening.

The weekend will exercise their planning, logistic, map reading,
pioneering, camping and catering skills amongst others. The youth members
will plan and undertake most aspects of the entire weekend themselves with
the leaders acting in a guiding and mentoring capacity. The efforts of
their work will contribute to their ongoing badge work with new skills
being learned and put into practice as well as having a thoroughly
enjoyable weekend. The team work and commitment displayed by this Scout
group has to be seen to be believed.

The station is planned to be operation from Friday 20 th October in the
evening through to Sunday 22 nd October mid-day and the group are
registered on the JOTA website as participating. The callsign *EI1K* will
be used for the Jamboree. Operation of the station may be cancelled at
short notice due to an active weather system that may bring strong winds
and heavy rain with the potential for localised flooding. We will endeavor
to update when the weather system track becomes clearer.

The 3rd Limerick Scout Group are hoping for good weather and are looking
forward to meeting both fellow Scouts and amateur radio operators from
around the world.
