SARL discusses CEPT Novice ham radio license with regulator

On July 7, 2017 the South African Radio League liaison meeting with the
regulator ICASA discussed an ECO letter requesting adoption of the CEPT
Novice amateur radio license

The South African Class B (ZU prefix) license is similar to UK Foundation.
It initially had a power limit of 20 watts but after a few years the power
level was increased to 100 watts which permitted the use of readily
available HF transceivers. The written exam has 30 questions with a 65%
pass mark. Unusually the license has a maximum age restriction, holders
must be under 25.

The meeting discussed the letter sent by the European Communications Office
(ECO) requesting CRASA to recommend that Southern African Development
Community (SADC) countries join the CEPT system and adopt European
Electronic Communications Commission (ECC) Recommendation (05)06, the CEPT
Novice license.

The SARL pointed out to their regulator that South Africa's Class B (ZU)
license is similar to the CEPT Novice License, ECC Recommendation (05)06.
The SARL indicated a desire that a CEPT Novice equivalent licence be made
available to all in South Africa, not limited by age.
