Impact of UK budget on radio spectrum

The UK budget announced on Wednesday states that the government will
allocate up to £600 million to deliver the change of use for 700 MHz
spectrum and centralise the operational management of public sector spectrum


The UK's technology trade association, techUK, says:




*Following Ofcom's decision that 700MHz spectrum, currently occupied by
Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasters, should be made available
for mobile data use, the Budget states that the government will allocate up
to £600 million to deliver the change of use. The funds are intended to
support the infrastructure costs of clearing the spectrum, including
support for consumers where appropriate, and retuning broadcast
transmitters to enable broadcasters to move into a lower frequency.In an
effort to enable better prioritisation of spectrum management, and
maximisation of the economic value of public sector spectrum, the Budget
announces that government will centralise the operational management of
public sector spectrum, currently managed by individual Departments. It
also proposes to reset the current release target.*
