30th anniversary of first Vodafone call

The first official mobile phone call made on the Racal Vodafone
network took place on Jan 1, 1985, but radio amateurs had been
developing mobile phones in the 1970's

In 1979 radio amateurs in Chelmsford developed a mobile phone based on
the Yaesu FT-202 144 MHz handheld which was demonstrated on the BBC
technology programme Tomorrow's World.  Read the story of this
