The new issue of the EUROCOM newsletter features PLT and the prospect of station assessments in Greece.

The newsletter says:

1. EUROCOM initiates parliamentary question on PLT

The EUROCOM WG introduced a parliamentary question to MEP Birgit Sippel, the sponsor of the exhibition on amateur radio in the European Parliament about a year ago. She forward it to the European Commission to be answered in written form. Just recently the answer (German, English) was published, being rather evasive. EUROCOM plans to stick to the topic, trying to get a more precise answer. The question and the answer can be downloaded on the IARU-R1 web page in the EUROCOM section in German and English.

2. Meeting in Friedrichshafen

In response to the Single Market Act Initiative [1] of the European Commission the EUROCOM WG responded with a statement, that can be download here [2] in German only. We mainly criticized the low value of the CE-Mark with respect to the EMC-Directive and the loss of market surveillance leading to many products entering the European market without showing sufficient compliance with the general EMC requirements.

3. Meeting in Friedrichshafen

This year, in 2011, we have our IARU-R1 conference in Sun-City, South Africa. WG meetings are to take place during the conference. Therefore no working group meetings are allowed besides the big meeting during the conference, unless is very urgent. I do not feel that this is the case for the EUROCOM WG. The EMC WG meeting however will take place, since urgent decisions are in the pipeline on the possible new PLT standard. The EMC WG will take place in Friedrichshafen, Friday, June 24th, 12:00 in the Verwaltungsgebäude 5th floor, Room A (the usual place). The EUROCOM WG would usually be right behind the EMC WG meeting starting at 14:00. This time could now be used for a longer session of the EMC WG. The EUROCOM WG meeting is officially cancelled, but I will be in the EMC WG meeting and stay longer. See also 4.

4. Station Assessment in Greece

The President of the Greek national society has recently informed the IARU-R1, that a national regulation in station assessment seems to be in the pipeline to become national law. As there are some countries, where similar regulations are in place the time of the EUROCOM WG in Friedrichshafen could informally be used to discuss different experiences. I invite all interested societies to come together and talk about this. As we had the topic station assessment on our agenda rather often in recent years, we always took the decision not to act towards European Commission in the field of radiation protection, but leave it to the member states to decide. In the majority of the member states this has worked effectively, since there is no special regulation in force that radio amateurs need to act on.
