Government reaffirms 2015 analog shutdown date

The UK Government appears to be committed to the 2015 date for the
switch-off of all national analog AM and FM broadcast stations.

In the recently released Digital Radio Action Plan they say:

The Government recognises the industry desire to reduce the burden of
dual-transmission through an early switchover. There are also benefits
to consumers of a quicker transition to digital radio and the
certainty this can bring, including a reduction in the price of
digital receivers through greater economies of scale. Therefore, the
timetable for the delivery of the Action Plan supports a switchover
date of 2015 as a target which all parts of the industry can work
towards.

• Practical Wireless editor Rob Mannion G3XFD has grave doubts about
the rush to digital radio, and was amongst the first to highlight the
problems that he believes will ensue.

He has launched a national campaign aimed at maintaining essential
traditional analogue broadcast radio for everyday listening and for
use in times of national emergencies.
