MAKE: Magazine - $8,000 DIY satellite kit

The MAKE blog carries a short item on a satellite you can launch for just $8,000.

The plan is to launch small Tube Sats on a Neptune 30 launcher from the island of Tonga in the Pacific and the first lauch is slated for the end of the year.

These satellite will go into a very low earth orbit and would probably have a lifetime of a few months.
