Depois de 3 anos de testes falhados e de 2 milhões de dolares enterrados num
sistema arcaico, mais uma companhia, desta vez Australiana, acaba de
abandonar o sistema PLC/BPL

The Tasmanian electricity retailer, Aurora Energy, is confident its
bottom line will improve after it dumps two of its major
telecommunications interests.

Aurora has decided to end its Broadband over Powerlines project which
has been in trials since 2004 at a cost of about $2 million.

The company is also selling its 70 per cent shareholding in another
telecommunications venture TasTel, Hydro Tasmania wrote off its
quarter shareholding in TasTel in 2003 after it struggled to compete.

The Aurora Chief Executive, Peter Davis, says he is confident TasTel
has a future but Aurora does not have the resources to maintain its
viability.

"It's fair to say that it's been a pretty competitive undertaking so
the money that we've invested has grown the business to where it is
but certainly it hasn't been a good money-making exercise for
Aurora," he said.

Mr Davis says the changes are the result of increasing competition in
the telecommunications industry.
