Greens and yellows denote hot gas. The erupting plasma looks dark red because it was cooler and denser than its surroundings.</p><p align="left">Fragments of the plume flew away from the sun, forming the core of a bright coronal mass ejection (CME): <a href="http://spaceweather.com/images2015/01oct15/cme_anim2.gif?PHPSESSID=7b7cm1ms1s4gpkncb4g566oaj3" target="_blank">movie</a>. There is a chance the CME will deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Oct. 3rd. Additional modeling is underway to confirm this possibility.
