India: Record number of new ham radio licenses in 2018/19

*Jose Jacobs VU2JOS* reports the officers and staff of the Amateur Cell,
WPC Wing, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a record number of
new amateur radio licenses in the 2018/19 financial year

In the 12 months to March 31, 2019 a total of 1155 new amateur radio
licenses were issued a significant increase over the 838 issued in FY
2017/18.

The report notes 1414 candidates were admitted for an amateur radio exam in
2018/19.



Since April 1, 2010, the DoT has been issuing 20 year or lifetime licenses.

There are two licence classes in India, General (400w HF, 25w VHF/UHF) and
Restricted (50w HF, 10w VHF/UHF). A licence costs 1000 rupees ($15) for
twenty years or 2000 rupees ($30) for lifetime.

India's Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications,
released the 2018/19 Amateur Radio statistics in their Annual Report. See
