FreeDV Codec2 digital voice talk at Chelmsford

On Tuesday, April 3, *Matthew Phillips G6WPJ* will give a talk* 'FreeDV -
Digital Voice for HF and other low SNR channels'* to the Chelmsford Amateur
Radio Society, the meeting is open to all

A digital alternative to SSB on HF?

Since the beginning of 2017 the RSGB News (GB2RS) has been broadcast on 80m
(~3.64 MHz) using FreeDV, an experimental digital mode intended to perform
better than SSB voice in difficult radio environments.

Matthew's talk will present information on FreeDV; what is it, how and why
is it being developed by a worldwide community of radio amateurs and how
can amateurs can try it for themselves.

Information will be presented on the pioneering work on the voice codec
used by FreeDV, which is called 'Codec2', developed by *David Rowe VK5DGR*.
In addition some thoughts on the future developments envisaged will be
presented.

The talk will include slides, diagrams, simple algorithm descriptions and
audio and video samples. An emphasis will be placed on practical ideas to
become active.

The Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) meetings take place on the 1st
Tuesday of each month at the Oaklands Museum, Moulsham Street, CM2 9AQ. The
doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start, car parking and admittance are free,
visitors are most welcome.
