Network Radios – a route into Amateur Radio?

Chris Rolinson G7DDN examines the challenges facing amateur radio and
wonders if Network Radios are where next “wave” of Radio Hams is to be
found

Writing on the Network-Radios site Chris describes how when
demonstrating the hobby to a 17-year-old she asked him "what the big
round thing on the large radio was" – it took him a while to realise
she was referring to the radio’s main tuning dial!

Being born in this century rather that the last, she understandably
had no idea what a tuning dial was.

Chris notes that even the concept of “tuning a signal in” is now lost
to most of the current generation!

He describes the Zello PTT app for smartphones which "operates like a
mini-Ham-Radio parallel universe".
