GPS lobby seeks block on use of nearby spectrum

A GPS World article highlights the attempt by GPS interests to exclude
other users from spectrum near 1575 MHz

The company Ligado wishes to use spectrum at 1526–1536 MHz. This is
below the 1575.42 MHz GPS frequency, the signal has a 24 MHz bandwidth
covering 1563.42 - 1587.42 MHz.

Vested interests are seeking to block Ligado's application to the FCC
on the grounds that GPS receivers currently in use will be unable to
function correctly if radio signals are present in nearby spectrum.
They say the receivers could lose lock on the satellites.

The Galileo GPS constellation operating in 1260-1300 MHz should become
fully operational in 2020. A 2006 paper by Peter Blair G3LTF indicated
an amateur radio beacon on 1296 MHz might cause interference to a
Galileo GPS receiver up to 18 km away, see
