Ham radio operators tune into community needs

When the *Gaston County Amateur Radio Society* put out the call to help the
Gaston Gazette Empty Stocking Fund, members donated $205

The Gaston Gazette reports:

That happened Monday night when the group met for its annual Christmas
party.

Back in 2010 I wrote a column about the tradition that started when Pat
N4DOX and Cy Rowe K1CY and other members decided to forgo the annual gift
exchange at the holiday party and instead use the money to help those in
need.

“The idea was to do something for someone else,†said Cy on Tuesday when he
and Pat stopped by The Gazette to present the donation. “There really is a
big need out there.â€

Cy is right about that. This Christmas, the Salvation Army expects to help
1,420 people, including 882 children, providing everything from warm
clothes to toys, to a food box with enough in it to prepare a holiday meal.
Seniors will also be helped. And thanks to supporters of the Empty Stocking
Fund, the Christian ministry will be able to help those who find themselves
struggling throughout the next year.

Pat said, the group could go shopping and buy clothes and other gifts but a
financial contribution to the Salvation Army seemed most appropriate.

“We know that this fits the need,†she said.

The radio group has a long, proud history of helping out in Gaston County.

Each year club members participate in Amateur Radio Relay League’s annual
Field Day, a national event designed to promote amateur broadcasting.
Operators stay on the air for 24 consecutive hours swapping messages with
fellow ham radio operators across the nation and world. It’s all part of an
effort to be ready in case of an emergency. The match between the Gaston
County Amateur Radio Society and the Salvation Army is a good one: Both are
ready to pitch in and help when needed.
