Radio Amateurs - a threatened species?

A workshop on The Future of Amateur Radio held at the 2017 IARU Region 1
General Conference in Landshut

Within ten years – probably less – member society numbers in many countries
seem likely to be in freefall. Our two challenges:
• Increasing the inflow into amateur radio – particularly among the young
• Making Member Societies the “must join†society for all radio amateurs

Among suggestions for making Amateur Radio “Fun†were:
• Competition
• Social
• Belonging to an elite group
• A welcomed part of the local club
• Recognition
• Learning and discovery – particularly latest technology
• Quick results/success
• Space is fun + ballooning
• KISS
• Discover that kits are fun and easy
• Use amateur radio to teach
