Authorising 2 GHz base stations to allow aeronautical communications
Ofcom has just published details of the technical conditions and fees for a
form of licence for the operation of 2 GHz terrestrial base stations
<http://ofcom.cmail19.com/t/i-l-odrgkd-ptjxkki-h/>.
In combination with a satellite, these base stations will provide broadband
services to aircraft. This publication follows our consultation in 2016 and
our recent decision to authorise this use.
This form of licence will permit Inmarsat to use spectrum in the 2 GHz band
to provide broadband services to passengers on aircraft. The company plans
to do this through a combination of satellite- and terrestrial-based
communication links to aircraft.
This document also includes, for information, the technical conditions of
any Notice of Variation of Aircraft Radio Equipment licences. Owners of
aircraft will need these to install and use terminals on their aircraft
which communicate with the terrestrial base stations.
