First Antenna Workshop

Eastern India's first Antenna Workshop was held at Shyamnagar,
organised by West Bengal Radio Club (Amateur Club) and National
Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR) on the occasion of World Amateur
Radio Day 2017 during 16-18 Apr 2017.

46 participants aged from 14 years to 72 years took part in this
workshop and made 10 nos, of 4 element VHF Yagi antennas. This type of
antenna was invented in 1926 by Shintaro Uda of Tohoku Imperial
University, Japan and (with a lesser role played by his colleague)
Hidetsugu Yagi.

The elements and the other tools were bought by the participants.
They used 9 mm diameter Aluminium Pipe for the elements and ¼ inch
square aluminium bar for the boom. With SO connector and Ferrite core,
the SWR was 1:2 in most of the antennas in one go. To correct the SWR,
it the element were trimmed to achieve 1:1 SWR. The centre frequency
we took was 145.000 MHz.

The entire workshop was divided into three teams with an assigned team
leader who helped them in the workshop and technical guidance to use
different kind of electric tools and soldering.

The 4 element Yagi antennas which were made in the said workshop will
be used by the operators to come on air by just using a handheld
transceiver through the existing Kolkata VHF Repeater.

At the time of foxhunting and at the time of finding distress signals
these type of antennas come very handy. Mountaineers from West Bengal
are getting in to our club after the mishap of Miss. Chanda Gayen and
learning a practical use of finding distress signals or beacons at the
time of disaster.

These Yagi will be very helpful in Gangasagar Mela because it will
cover more distance compared to the GP antenna.

This type of workshop will help in the process of rescuing at the time
of Disaster said by Mr. Anirban Mukhopareadhyay (Officer at State
Disaster Management) and Mr. Udaybhan Singh of Kolkata off roaders was
also present in the historical event. They are helping us to
understand the concept of off roading at the time of natural disaster.
"I am really proud and excited for this workshop and looking ahead for
more of this type of workshop" said by Miss Amrita who works at CESE.
Another member Mr. Sourav Sadhukha said this was a lifetime experience
for us in the process of becoming more and more technically expert in
making yagi antenna.

The workshop was lead by Mr. Ambarish Nag Biswas (VU2JFA), Secretary,
West Bengal Radio Club (Amateur Club) and Mr. Samar Kumar Biswas
(VU3ZHN), AGM Netaji Subhash Bose International Airport
