AM and CW on ANZAC Day, 25th April 2017

The traditional AM & CW event organized by Mike 'Banjo' Patterson
VK4MIK and the Tablelands Radio Group of Far North Queensland, will
again take to the air for the 7th year.

This is not a contest. It honours those modes used by service
personnel in earlier wars -AM and CW.

The event idea came from a telephone conversation between Mike "Banjo"
Patterson VK4MIK and World War II Coastwatcher in Papua New Guinea,
Lionel Veale. He set up his ATR4A HF radio and orientated the antenna
from behind enemy lines. Lionel was one of those brave
Coastwatchers who sent back vital information.

The concept developed by the Tableland Radio Group in Far North
Queensland basically asks us to consider changing modes on ANZAC Day
nets, as a special way of Honouring those who served and are still
serving by an Amateur Radio Salute.

The annual event involves ex-military sites and related museums.
It includes the Gnarly Net on 3600kc AM/ 3599 CW with CW from 1930Z
and AM from 2030Z and the Friendly Afternoon Net on 7115kc from 0600Z
in Northern Queensland.

Ex HMAS Diamantina will be operating as VK4RAN from 0300 to 0700UTC on
CW on 7020/7025kc and 14038/14052kc plus/minus. It was operational
during World War II.

The Tableland Radio Group will be operating from Rocky Creek War
Memorial Park Igloo near Atherton, with the Callsign VK4GHL.

The Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club hope to operate using AX4WAT
from the TREC Clubrooms using a home brew AM transceiver.

The Amateurs from Ingham, in North Queensland, hope to be operating
from the Herbert River RSL and will be operating on a range of
frequencies with the callsign AX4MS.

The Townsville Amateur Radio Club will be active on the callsign
AX4WIT from the Club Rooms in Green Street, which were part of the
camouflage used to protect the RAAF WW2 Pacific Theatre Communications
Centre
from enemy bombing. AX4WIT will be operational from 0001Z AM and CW on 7115kc

Ex-Serviceman and licenced amateur radio operator Eldon Bryant [ also
known to many people as DON ], will again be active during ANZAC Day
2017 PM using HF/AM from his home / radio shack at Carlyle Gardens
and all amateur radio stations contacted, whether within Australia [
VK ] or overseas [ DX ], will receive his special QSL via mail to
confirm the contact.

More stations will be also operating and switching to the old modes
during the day.

Many Amateurs joined our Defence forces and took their skills into
their service lives in a wide range of activities such as
Coastwatchers, Air force Radio operators, Radar operators and repair,
navy radio operators and Army operations.

LEST WE FORGET

de VK4MIK Mike ex RAN
