Beijing targets free radio stations

It is reported that in February officials in Beijing initiated a six-month,
nationwide crackdown on free radio broadcasters

Apparently so far over 400 stations have been shut down cross the country.
Officials say these broadcasts are taking place in all the areas
administered by the government in Beijing with the exception of Tibet.

Authorities estimate it can cost around 50-thousand yuan ($7740) a month to
set up and maintain the transmitters, which are normally based in
residential areas. Some of the larger operations are reportedly able to
make millions of yuan in profits through the sale of their air-time. This
is perhaps an indication of the popularity of the stations.
