Ham radio HT of the future ?

Open Source evengilist *Bruce Perens K6BP* calls it the HT of the Future.
It's a product he and partner *Chris Testa KD2BMH* are working on that's
basically a Software Defined Radio for VHF/UHF mobile, and eventually
handheld use

A more official name is Whitebox, because it's open source, as opposed to
Black Box - a sealed module that you can't get into.

The Whitebox can be programmed for any analog or digital mode. It'll use a
VHF version of FreeDV as a native digital-voice mode. The proprietary modes
like D-STAR, DMR, System Fusion may require some external hardware, like a
dongle. And it will run apps, like a smartphone. It's not a pipe dream –
they're in the prototype stage, or, as Bruce says, they're working on the
version for Rocket Scientists. The next version will be for end users.

Bruce updated progress on the Whitebox in a talk at the Orlando HamCation.
You can see it on HamRadioNow.tv Episode 194. And note that Episode 193 is
an update on FreeDV with CODEC2 inventor David Rowe VK5DGR. The last third
of the program focuses on David's project for a FreeDV VHF radio using
TDMA, including an "on-channel repeater" function (no input frequency, no
duplexer).
