UK propagation predictions for the upcoming Navassa DXpedition
Steve G0KYA, of the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee, has prepared
some detailed propagation predictions for UK amateurs wanting to work
the upcoming K1N Navassa DXpedition.
The DXpedition to Navassa Island in the Caribbean is due to kick off
in the next couple of weeks. Navassa is a United States island, just
west of Haiti. It is rare because there hasn't been a DXpedition to
Navassa in 22 years, and there is unlikely to be another for another
10!
At least one station will be on 20 meters 24 hours a day. 160M and 12M
will be CW only and 10M will be SSB only. Other bands will alternate
CW and SSB. At least one station will always be on RTTY, and they will
operate RTTY on no more than three bands.
The analysis shows that there are possibilities on every band, with
the night time being best for Top Band to 40m, and the lunchtime and
early afternoon favouring the upper HF bands. Around sunrise in the UK
might throw up some surprises on 160m and 80m with greyline
conditions.
Steve says that as it is a sea path, and goes nowhere near the poles,
signals may be quite loud and reliable. His predicted "best" bands for
modestly-equipped stations are 12m (24 MHz) and 15m (21 MHz).
