In his blog *David Rowe VK5DGR* describes his work on increasing the
robustness of *FreeDV* over HF radio channels, in particular compared to
analog SSB

He says HF radio channels are bad news for digital data so he has been
trying a dramatically reduced bit rate of just 450 bps and coherent QPSK
instead of differential QPSK.
