Decline of Ham Radio in Germany

The DARC reports the number of German amateur radio licences fell by
2255 (3.2%) in 2013

As of December 31, 2013 there were 68191 amateur radio licences (2012:
70446; 2011: 71659; 2010: 72293) continuing the pattern of steady
decline in recent years.

The total including Club Stations, repeaters, beacons and special
calls and training calls was 75031 (2012: 77089; 2011: 78109; 2010:
78537).

The number of new people joining the hobby did show a welcome increase
in 2013 with 829 receiving an amateur radio certificate as against 724
in 2012. However, this figure falls far short of the number needed to
stabilize the amateur population. DARC say the number of exam
participants were 909 in 2013 and 804 in 2012.

The educational training callsigns (DN) showed an increase in 2013
with 2711 DN calls issues - 183 more than 2012 (2528). The comparison
to 2010 (2126 DN calls) shows a 27.5% increase.

The German DN callsigns are held by amateur radio trainers and are
used by unlicenced people operating under the direct control of the
trainer. There would appear to be over three times as many trainers as
there are new people receiving their amateur radio certificates.
