Lightship is the ILLW 300th entrant
The 17th annualInternational Lighthouse and Lightship
Weekendprestigious 300th registration goes to the USA Lightship
Columbia WLV-604, operated by theSunset Empire Amateur Radio Club
W7BU.
Now at Astoria in the State of Oregon, it used to guard the Columbia
River Bar in Columbia. The last operational US West Coast lightship,
the Columbia WLV-604 is on the National Register of Historic Places
and has guided tours. W7BU will be heard from the radio room.
A sister vessel the Nantucket Lightship LV-112, now at Boston Harbor
as W1NLS, was the world's largest lightship that guided US east coast
shipping including those carrying thousands of immigrants.
The fun-event has registrations so far from 38 countries. The USA is
in the lead with 53 including 14 first-time registrations, ahead of
Germany 52 and Australia 51.
England has 22, followed by Argentina 15, Sweden and Netherlands 11,
Scotland 9, Denmark and Finland 7, Ireland and Wales 6, New Zealand
and Puerto Rico 5, and Northern Ireland and South Africa 4.
Many other countries have fever registrations which are most welcome.
Among them is the Golden Jubilee Lighthouse under the Radio Amateur
Society of Thailand (RAST) callsign E2E, on the headland in the
southern-most part of Phuket.
Among the aims of the event that began two decades ago is to raise
public awareness of old marine structures and the need for their
preservation, as well as publicise portable Amateur Radio stations
during an activity weekend.
There are simple guidelines and registration available online for the
International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend on August the 16th and
17th, see the website www.illw.net
