The GAREC-2014 program has plenty of interest

The emergency communications provided by radio amateurs in the
Philippines Super Typhoon will be among many presentations and
displays at the Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communications(GAREC),
on August 14-15 held in conjunction with Alabama's Huntsville Hamfest.

This is the 9th year the annual event has been held rotationally in
the three IARU regions and has become an established event not to be
missed by those involved in emergency communications.

GAREC-2014 invites all involved the presentations advanced
technologies applied to emergency communications, expect reports on
the past 12 months from the three IARU regions, and see displays.

A detailed presentation will be given on the Super Typhoon Haiyan
(Yolanda) that struck the central part of the Philippines and involved
100 radio amateurs in the HERO (Ham Emergency Radio Operations)
Network.

Through the IARU member society the Philippines Amateur Radio
Association they trained and prepared for the disaster, helping
agencies during the recovery phase.

Other presentations expected to be given are the work of radio
amateurs following flooding in Brazil, and the Fukushima Nuclear
Disaster in Japan.

Delegates are to see the work of Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio
Network and the Military Auxiliary Radio System. Formal message
handling, the National Traffic Service and Third Party Traffic is
certain to be discussed.

Attendance at GAREC-2014 also offers the opportunity to attend the big
Huntsville Hamfest, an ARRL Centennial Event, on the weekend of August
16-17 2014. (Details at www.hamfest.org/).

If you want to know more about GAREC check out the
websitehttp://www.w4ozk.com/GAREC14.htm

The first GAREC was in Tampere Finland in 2005 as a showcase for
emergency communications groups to show how they prepare and responded
to disasters.

The event has been held in the USA, Germany, Japan, Curacao, South
Africa, Malaysia and Switzerland to give more an opportunity to be
involved.

The GAREC has set the Centre of Activity frequencies, has a formal
understanding with the IARU, and is the only venue to bring together
those involved in emergency communications to share ideas and
experiences.
