2SZ on the air October 11-18

The RSGB report the special event station 2SZ will be on the air from
Mill Hill School, North London from October 11-18 to celebrate the
first two-way radio communication between the UK and New Zealand

On October 18, 1924, the first radio communication contact between the
UK and New Zealand took place between (G)2SZ at Mill Hill School, the
station operated by 18 year-old former pupil Cecil Goyder, and (Z)4AA
in Shag Valley, South Island, New Zealand, operated by Frank Bell.

The contact attracted the attention of the national press and was
reported in the Daily Mail newspaper on October 21, 1924.

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of this historic contact, radio
amateurs at stations in Mill Hill School and Shag Valley will recreate
the first Goyder/Bell contact, hopefully on a wavelength close to that
was used in 1924. The callsign 2SZ will be used at Mill Hill School
from October 11-18 and GB2NZ will be active from September 20 to
October 18.

It is believed this is only the second time that the UK regulator has
permitted radio amateurs to use three character callsigns to
commemorate a special event. The first occurrence being in December
2001 when 2MT was used in Chelmsford, Essex to celebrate the centenary
of Marconi's reception of a transatlantic radio signal.
