International Marconi Day down-under

NZART report on amateur radio IMD activities taking place in Oceania
on Saturday April 26

IMD is an international event, timed to celebrate Guglielmo Marconi's
birthday, and is on the Saturday nearest April 25. This year it is the
26th. Around the world there are more that 60 stations in locations
with some link to Marconi. These are called "Award Stations".

The only example in Oceania is VK2IMD, located at Hornsby on the Upper
North Shore of Sydney. This is close to Wahroonga, where Ernest Fisk
received the first official direct radio message from Britain.
This message was sent by Marconi from near Caernarfon (then called
Carnarvon) in NW Wales, on behalf of Australian PM Billy Hughes on
September 22, 1918.

IMD runs from 0000 to 2359 UTC on the Saturday, meaning midday on the
26th to midday on the 27th, New Zealand time. The event is restricted
to MF and HF bands.

VK2IMD is operated by HADARC, the Hornsby and Districts Amateur Radio
Club, Inc. Visitors are most welcome at HADARC meetings, and on the
Club's VHF and HF nets.
