UK Radio Hams to launch 434 MHz balloons this weekend

UK radio amateurs will be launching several high altitude balloons
with 434 MHz telemetry beacons this weekend.

The balloons should have a range of over 500 km covering much of the
British Isles.

 Provisional launch information:

David M0MDB hopes to launch ANU-6 on Sat, June 8 at about 1200 BST -
depending on conditions. He will be trying out an IR modified Canon
A490.

There will be two tracker beacons -
 434.075 MHz call-sign ANU
434.250 MHz call-sign NANU

Anthony M0UPU will be assisting a school to launch from the Churchill
College launch site in Cambridge on Saturday, June 8.
Frequencies 434.650 and 434.475 MHz.

Adam Cudworth may do a flight, HABE 8, from Worcester, probably on
Sunday, using 434.300 MHz.

John M0JCU has had to delay his launch due to high ground winds but
hopes to be able to launch from Chalgrove in Oxfordshire on Monday or
Tuesday.

 Frequencies:
VORTEX on 434.077 (prime) 50 baud
 VORTEX3 on 434.223 (backup) 50 baud
 VORTEX4 on 434.325 (backup) 50 baud
HELIOSS on 434.651 (prime) 300 baud

Later in the week Chris Stubbs is planning a low ascent rate
floaty/pico type flight for the June 14, 2013. Lift off should be
about 4PM BST from Chelmsford, Essex, Last flight used 434.650/434.300
MHz.

From Slovakia Radim OM2AMR brings news of the STS-4 Demo Flight for
June 8, 2013 from HAM FEST Borovce 2013 which may be receivable in
parts of England.

Launch window is set to 6-8AM UTC from CAA.SK - estimated time is
around 7AM UTC, but it depends on final ATC permission.
Flight: STS-4
Freq: 438.020 MHz USB, ca 20 mW of RF Power
 UKHAS RTTY 300Bd, 7N2, 450 Hz shift
 Launch site: 48.5764, 17.7455, alt. 190m
Payload: STSv3 PICO (1.8V - powered by two AA in parallel - it will
last about 50 hours of operation in case of float)

Tracker will send after each 20 packets its CW ID: DE OM13STS.

We will use small 100g latex balloon and we will try it to fill with
hydrogen for as-low-as-possible ascend rate (depends on ground wind
conditions).

Estimated burst (if any) altitude will be 22000m.
