The FT-950 is likely the best radio I will ever own. I can't afford it and would not have it if not for a very timely swap (TS-570S plus $150 for the FT-950). And I absolutely love the FT-950. You guys are killing me...... :)

Was in HRO the other day and lusting over the
FTDX9000MP. Had a tidy price tag of just a few
bucks under $12K. Being a tight wad my lust
severely torqued my Scroogeness almost to
the extent of twisting it off. However if I bought
that thing I would likely be the first trans-rectal
human transplant recipient of a Yaesu product
  from the ex XYL.

  The
Golden Years turn out to be a myth. So, I decided to invest in what will
probably be my last radio. My goal is to get all the DX confirmed I can. After
reading everything I can find, including several hundred messages on the forums,
I decided to buy the FTDX3000K. Except for the great little DX-35 (Heathkit) I
built as a novice at age 14, all I have ever owned is Yaesu. The first was an
FT101E. I loved it! It worked 200 countries for me. When I retired (2009), I
bought the FT-950. It has added another 65 or so countries . I now have the
FTDX3k sitting in the box waiting for a recent surgery to heal. I fully expect
it to carry me to 300 confirmed.

The secret, however, is operating skills
and ANTENNA. The AL-80B helps a lot too. My advice is to go for the FTdx3K and
the best antenna you can manage. Good luck es 73,

  [FT-950] FT 950 or ????

Thanks for the heads up on the QST and other
articles. I didn't even see it as I'm packing to move. But, I dug it out and
checked it out. Now, being a greenhorn I'm wondering whether I should get the
FTDX3000 now or get the '2000 and the needed options. But, by the time I add the
options there isn't much different in the price. This will probably be my last
  radio after I move. I even thought about a FTDX5000. But, I don't think I need
  it. I appreciate the replies.

  Happy
  Holidays

  James
