Another milestone for the ILLW
About 12 vessels, put where it was dangerous yet impossible to build a
permanent structure to warn shipping, are so far in the *International
Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend*. One has scored being the prestigious
400th registration.
Australia's *Carpentaria CLS-4 Lightship* designed in Scotland and built in
1917 at Sydney's Cockatoo Island Dockyard - in fact the towed craft came as
a pair, one flashing navigation while its sister was in port for
maintenance work.
Now fully restored and moored at the Australian National Maritime Museum at
Darling Harbour, Sydney, it will put on air by members of the Hornsby and
Districts Amateur Radio Club VK2MA.
The vessel spent most time in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the northern edge
of Australia, later moved to south of the continent in the Bass Strait
oilfields, before retirement in 1985.
Australia remains in the lead with 67 registrations ahead of Germany 61,
and the USA on 51.
So far 425 registrations have been received from 41 countries. The latest
being from Brazil for this fun-event held on August 17 and 18 with all of
its online facilities at www.illw.net
