Automatic meter reading on 169 MHz

What is claimed to be the world's first long range 169 MHz Automatic Meter Reading module has been released

The module is compliant with the new prEN 13757-4:2011, operating in the new harmonized frequency band for meter reading in the British Isles and Europe.

The typical range is claimed to be 1.5 km in urban areas and 20 to 40 km in open terrain with quarter-wave antennas. The module supports two-way communication at 2.4 and 4.8 kbps in 6 narrowband channels, and 38.4 kbps in a 50 kHz channel.

Wireless solutions such as this are a far better approach to reading meters than using the polluting PLT technology which spews broadband interference down the electricity mains. PLT can ruin peoples' enjoyment of radio over a wide area.
