South Carolina Hams 'Keep Communications Open'

News 13 TV in South Carolina say radio amateurs are always ready to
assist emergency management officials when the big storm strikes.

The report describes how members of the Grand Strand Amateur Radio
Club are equipped with - and quickly becoming trained to use - new
computer terminals called packet systems.
The packet essentially uses the same over-the-air frequencies most
long-range and shortwave amateur radios use to transmit text-only
messages from one computer to another.
The advantage is, amateur radio operators deployed during an emergency
can react better and sometimes more quickly to a request from another
location.
