Small-scale DRM shortwave video service announced

Fraunhofer IIS has announced the worldwide launch of Diveemo®, the new 
small-scale video service for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) at IBC 2010.

Developed by Fraunhofer IIS, Diveemo was showcased on Monday, September 
13, at the launch event hosted by the DRM Consortium. The launch 
featured the world’s frst Diveemo transmission of a live video broadcast 
from Babcocks 1296 kHz transmitter at Orfordness in the UK that was 
received on a NewStar DRM receiver.

The video transmissions occupy a bandwidth of 18kHz and deliver 176 x 
144 (16.7m color) pixel video at 8 frames per second.

They provide a means of delivering video content using the medium wave 
and short wave bands to people over a geographically large area 
bypassing the censorship that oppressive regimes may apply to domestic 
TV and the Internet.

Shortwave broadcasting is worth its weight in gold when it comes to 
reaching trouble spots and disaster areas at short notice. When natural 
disaster strikes, the communications infrastructure is usually put out 
of action precisely when the local population require reliable news and 
information.

Diveemo shortwave video broadcasts can reach into disaster areas from 
far away bringing much needed information to the stricken population.
