Phil G0WSP/ZL in New Zealand showed you don't need high power when he worked John EA7BA in Spain using just 5 watts on 20m.

The YouTube description reads:

DX QRP contact 12.000 miles between New Zealand and Spain.

Only 5 watts from Yaesu FT-817 and into home brew 20mtr Inverted Vee Dipole at 5 mtrs.
