Four radio hams to join Radio Arcala contest team
Radio Arcala, OH8X, reports great interest and we have received many applications from younger contesters to travel to 65 degrees North and contest under large frozen antennas at OH8X<http://www.radioarcala.com/>.
Given the level of interest, the conclusion is that hosting young radio amateurs at contest stations should be promoted on a broader scale as part of the contesting landscape.
The 2010 team will be welcomed to the city of Oulu<http://www.ouka.fi/english/index.asp> by OH6KN and OH8NC.
Marius Hauki, LB3HC, will be heading a group of four and the team includes Andreas Kristiansen (30), LA8AJA, Stein Roar Brobakken (30), LA6FJA and Antti Nevantaus (28), OH7EA. They are experienced CW and contest operators who look forward to putting out big signals from Radio Arcala.
They plan to run M2 in the ARRL DX CW Contest and also to be active the day before the contest. QSL via OH2UA.
By the same token, Radio Arcala's Ville, OH2MM, is moving permanently to Brazil and will soon be QRV as PY2ZEA.
His farewell operation from Europe will be in the ARRL DX CW Contest as CR2X*. Ville will team up in the Azores with Martti, OH2BH, and Pertti, OH2PM, as a multi-op entry.

CU2X*
Adding to the success of the previous CU2X location, a lot of effort has been put into building a new radio site in Ribeira Grande, the second largest city in the Azores, located on the north coast of Sao Miguel Island. The new location also pushed the Azores team to new heights, making their services available to their immediate community.
On October 4, 2008 Mr. Ricardo José Moniz da Silva, the Mayor of the City of Ribeira Grande, paid a visit to the new location and made the very first radio contact at CU2X. He spoke with Mr. Avelino Bettencourtt, CU2DE, another Azores operator in the remote village of Ribeira Quente.
The significance of this radio contact was that Mr Bettencourtt's amateur radio station offered the only means of communication from his village when the area was hit by heavy rains, causing a landfall and destroying many houses in his part of the island and isolating the entire area from the rest of the island.
The new CU2X site will be fully set up for operation in any emergency situation, whether inter-island or over the whole of Azores Islands.
The CU2X radio location is manned by the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium, and it is activated frequently in conjunction with Amateur Radio special events and radio competitions.
The group behind the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium consists of:
Fernando Tavares, CU2BV, former Finnish Honorary Consul to the Azores; Jose Melo, CU2CE and Francisco Gil, CU2DX and from Finland, Martti Laine, OH2BH, Toni Linden, OH2UA and Juha Hulkko, OH8NC.
The station is part of the Arcala Extremes radio network.
