2 Metre AM
One of the recent changes to the RSGB bandplan was the addition of a note concerning AM operation on 2 metres.
The use of AM on 144 MHz has been increasing in recent years and 144.550 MHz has become a popular frequency for the mode.
Interest in the mode is driven by the availability of cheap ex-PMR equipment and because VHF AM rigs can be simple to build making them ideal home construction projects.
A Yahoo group has been established to foster VHF (and 10m) AM operation.
Note 8 of the bandplan says:
The use of Amplitude Modulation (AM) is acceptable within the All Modes segment.
AM usage may often be found on 144.550MHz although this frequency is not officially recognised within the 2M band plan.
AM users are asked to consider adjacent channel activity when selecting operating frequencies.
