The UK regulator Ofcom has supplied the figures for the total number of Amateur Radio Licences issued as at 31st March 2009

It should be remembered that these figures are for the number of licences issued not the number of stations. UK Radio Amateurs can hold multiple licences/call signs and it is understood that a former RSGB President held 5 separate UK Amateur Radio call signs.
The increase in the number of Full/Advanced licences over the past year is far greater than the number of candidates who have sat the exam. One explanation for this is that Amateurs first licenced in the 1980's and 90's who let their original licence lapse have recently applied for it again.
