Increasing uptake in interest in D-STAR has led to an explosion of D-STAR repeaters going live in the UK , Europe and North America.

To satisfy this huge demand and cement their commitment to this digital voice standard, Icom are proud to announce a new D-STAR portable radio called the IC-E92D which will allow you to communicate cross band over the D-STAR Network.

The IC-E92D is a first in many ways, being the first Icom Amateur portable to have a dedicated optional HM-175GPS GPS speaker microphone.

There are five other significant features:

 * This radio is digital as soon as you get it out of the box, there are no add-on boards to fit into it.

 * It is fully compatible with existing FM Amateur Radios and D-STAR radios including the IC-E91 (With UT-121), IC-2820 (with UT-123), ID-800H, IC-U82 (with UT-118) and IC-2200H (with UT-118).

 * The IC-E92D is the first Icom Amateur portable to have a dedicated optional GPS speaker microphone. The HM-175GPS allows the IC-E92D to display positional information on the screen and offers position-reporting function in Digital Voice mode. The IC-E92D can show the direction to a received D-STAR station or to a memory position with a compass like display needle.

 * The IC-E92D and HM-175GPS provide users with waterproof protection equivalent to IPX7 (1m depth of water for 30 minutes). The combination of waterproofing and military-spec build makes it more than appropriate for use in conditions that may be experience by voluntary emergency organisations such as Raynet.

 * The IC-E92D has a new high capacity 1620 mAH Li-Ion battery as standard

In addition to its digital credentials, the IC-E92D is a Dualband transceiver providing 5W in both VHF and UHF bands. It features a wideband receiver with Dualwatch capability, allowing you to receive two bands simultaneously (including the same band). It also features a one-touch reply function. This uses the received callsign (including repeater callsign) and allows you to call back to the calling station without hassle. Up to 20 received callsigns are stored in the received call history.

The IC-E92D has a built-in voice recorder, which records an incoming call in Digital Voice mode for up to approximately 30 seconds. This can also be partitioned into 3 tracks (10 seconds each). The 10-second transmit memory allows you to record your callsign, CQ and automatically answers when you receive a message.

When the IC-E92D is connected to a PC via a RS-232C cable, most functions of the IC-E92D can be controlled from the PC. If you have appropriate mapping software and a serial port you can plot positional information on your PC as well. In Digital Voice mode, you can send and receive short messages of up to 20 characters on your PC.

Ian Lockyer, Marketing Manager of Icom (UK) Ltd said, 'The introduction of the IC-E92D satisfies a growing world-wide demand for D-STAR products and complements the recently launched IC-E2820 series and the first dual band D-STAR handheld, IC-E91. The IC-E92D is ideal for D-STAR enthusiasts, active amateurs who are fans of outdoor pursuits or organisations that are looking for a simple GPS position reporting system.'
