Kenwood announced a new radio that apparently supports Echolink on FM if you're interested in doing that.

I spoke with a Japanese Kenwood representative about D-STAR. He said that although Kenwood resells an Icom D-STAR radio in Japan at this point they are focusing their efforts on the commercial land mobile market where apparently they do joint research with Icom.

The Japanese representative from Yaesu was much more definitive and said they have no plans to introduce a D-STAR radio.

As the D-STAR market grows time will tell if their stance changes.

So at this point Icom remains the technical & market leader in digital voice communications on VHF & UHF in the ham world.

Interesting enough though, some American hams have reverse engineered the D-STAR protocol. One ham demonstrated a homebrew 2m D-STAR radio and other demonstrated some software enhancements to the internet gateway capability.
